Retail
The retail environment has the added challenges of dealing with public as well as their staff in the workplace. More often than not there are considerable interactions taking place between the physical environment, installations and shop fittings, the people who work in the space and the shoppers and public in general. These interactions require detailed examination to establish the level of risk to persons and or the business and are undoubtedly best assessed at the concept and design phase of any project.
Any retail environment will benefit from having an early input from a qualified ergonomists with experience in this industry sector. Retrospective audits and refits have been proven to be many times more expensive than any investment in the concept and design phase of any roll-out.
Hu-Tech has considerable experience of working in partnership with design agencies and shop-fitters in bringing about safe and efficient retail systems on behalf of the common client.
Examples include:
Point of sale (EPOS)
We carried out an initial design review and provided guidance on the positioning and orientation of an electronic signature verification device for integration into an existing range of point of sale cash counters.
Customer interface design
Advice has been given on the location and accessibility of ATMs/cash machines in public settings. The suitability of the colour, font, font size, navigation aids and other relevant human computer interface issues have been assessed to ensure that such facilities are inclusive for all.
Sales floor counters and workstations design and audit
We have developed and designed many sales floor counters for a range of organisations in the retail environment. Design advice has also been given on the dimension and appropriate layout of displays taking into account both the replenishment issues and ease of reach for the customer.
Store layout
Recommended sales floor and storage layouts have been developed to minimise the risk of health and safety risks, particularly those due to manual handling.
